Melissa Cookson’s Coal Play is in a category of its own thanks to copious herbs and its striking black appearance from activated charcoal. Salt gets my attention right away, paving the way for a surprising amount of herbal goodness that’s unexpected in a black seasoning. Classy and special.
Tastes like salt, garlic and black pepper with a rosemary aromatic that catches me by surprise, given the black color. I liked this rub WAY better than I expected to, given the noir appearance. Try it on any beef, game, lamb or even pork carnitas.
